The main enemy of iron is corrosion, moreover the uncontrollable nature of corrosion. However, we can try to control the corrosion process and appreciate the beauty of rusted iron without loosing the long-lasting mechanical features of steel. The most fitting material is Corten.

Corten is an original natural material which is resistant to weather conditions. As good wine, it maturates with time and its surface patina contributes to the unique color and look. Once you discover the unconventional and fox-like nature of Corten, you become fascinated by it – just as we did. It’s maintenance-free, recyclable, and efficient. With the use of Corten, no construction can be overlooked.
Corten is a low-alloy steel and its optimized alloying elements (copper, chrome, nickel and phosphor) create unique mechanical and anticorrosive features. There are three types of Corten steel – A, B and B-D, we use mainly type A, which is most suitable for use in art, design and architecture.
The Corten steel is resistant to atmospheric corrosive process mainly due to the patina, which is the result of the surface oxidation process with a minimal oxygen permeability, which means the corrosion process stops by itself. Surface oxidation is formed by regular and continuous soaking with water followed by drying, which normally takes under our weather conditions 18-36 months.
The color of the patina surface is close to ginger-brown foxlike color, which turns into dark brown as it ages. In industrial area the patina surface on Corten steel is created faster and turns darker than in cleaner suburban or natural areas. If the Corten surface was constantly wet or constantly dry, the conditions would not be suitable for the patina to develop. If we apply Corten steel in interior design we have to start the corrosion artificially or apply matured Corten with its patina surface already developed
The Corten steel looks like a regular structural steel. It adopts its unique look only after setting off the corrosion processes. In case of exterior application, such as for fences, fireplaces, flower-pots, facades – Corten develops patina naturally due to exterior humidity. When applying the material for interior objects the activation of regulated patination process is activated after applying a specialized surface patinated coating. Artificially patinated surface of Corten material can be stabilized to prevent further oxidation of the surface. This method is suitable predominantly for interior objects.

An accurate work with lifelong durability and minimal maintenance requirements is the result of careful application of principles necessary for working with Corten material. To prevent the formation of corrosion-like smears, especially in the patination process, the surrounding objects should be made out of materials that have darker color and don’t require regular cleaning. The corroded water has to be drained into channels. The oxidation process is over, once the material develops a dark brown color shade. From this point on, corroded elements will remain on the surface and create natural patina. This process takes approximately 18-36 months.
